How to write a bill of sale for a motorcycle
VIN and engine size
The 17-character VIN is stamped on the steering neck or the engine case — copy it from the bike, not the title. Note engine displacement (cc) in the item description; some states classify bikes and register them differently by cc (mopeds vs. motorcycles vs. street bikes). If the bike has aftermarket parts that changed the displacement (e.g., a big-bore kit), record the current displacement.
Odometer disclosure applies
The same federal rule (49 CFR 580) that covers cars covers motorcycles under 20 model years old — the current mileage must be disclosed in writing at the time of sale. Solda's template asks for the reading and lets you mark it as actual, exceeds mechanical limits, or not actual (broken/replaced speedometer). This protects the seller from odometer-fraud claims.
As-is clause is critical for bikes
Motorcycles are sold used far more often than cars, and mechanical complaints are the most common source of post-sale disputes. Always include the standard as-is language: "The motorcycle is sold AS-IS, WHERE-IS, with no warranty of any kind, express or implied." If the sale includes helmets, jackets, or spare parts, list them so there's no argument about what was in the deal.
Title, registration, and lien check
Before you sign, verify the seller's name matches the title, and check for any liens listed on the title face. A motorcycle with an open lien can't be transferred until the lienholder releases it. Once cleared, the seller signs the title over, both parties sign the bill of sale, and the buyer takes both to the DMV within the state's transfer window (usually 10–30 days).
Two copies, both signed
Both parties sign and date; each keeps a copy. Most states don't require notarization for motorcycle bill-of-sale, but Louisiana, West Virginia, Nebraska, Montana, and Kentucky do — check your state before finalizing.
