Details that matter on a cart

Golf carts change hands quickly and often informally, which is exactly why a written record helps. The three things buyers ask about are the serial number, the batteries, and whether the cart is street-legal.

Serial number

Find the plate or stamped number on the frame — under the dash, beneath the seat, in the glove box, or near the rear bumper depending on the manufacturer. Copy it exactly. A cart converted to a low-speed vehicle will also have a 17-character VIN assigned to it; record both if both exist.

Battery type and age

On an electric cart the battery pack is the most expensive wear item, so its type — flooded lead-acid, AGM, or lithium — and the year it was last replaced belong in the document. Writing down "48V lithium, installed 2025" is a factual record of what was represented at the time of sale. On a gas cart, note engine size and hours if a meter is fitted instead.

Street-legal or LSV status

Carts equipped with headlights, turn signals, mirrors, seat belts, and a windshield are often sold as low-speed vehicles. Whether that equipment is enough for road use, and whether registration or a title is involved, depends on the rules where the cart will be driven — check your state's requirements. Record the equipment that is actually fitted rather than making a claim about legality.

Accessories

Chargers, rear seat kits, lift kits, enclosures, covers, and spare keys are all detachable. List what is included so nothing goes missing between the handshake and the pickup.
