What is a bill of sale?

A short document that proves a private sale happened.

It names the seller and the buyer, describes the item, states the price and the date, and is signed by both people. That's it.

Why it matters

The seller uses it to prove they're no longer responsible for the item. The buyer uses it to register the item in their name or prove ownership later.

What it should include

  • Seller name and address
  • Buyer name and address
  • Item description — year, make, model, VIN or serial number
  • Sale price and date
  • "As-is" clause
  • Signatures from both parties
